Mauritius Research and Innovation Council (MRIC):Mauritius is taking significant strides in space technology, particularly in areas such as maritime security, environmental monitoring, and oceanic surveillance. At the forefront of this effort is the Mauritius Research and Innovation Council (MRIC), which oversees the nation’s space-related initiatives, leveraging satellite data to address critical challenges such as illegal fishing, coastal erosion, and disaster management. Through its space initiatives, Mauritius aims to safeguard its extensive maritime resources and manage the impacts of climate change on its coastal ecosystems.

In June 2021, Mauritius launched its first CubeSat, MIR-SAT1, marking a major milestone in the country’s space journey. This CubeSat is equipped to collect essential data that supports disaster management, ocean monitoring, and environmental protection efforts. It plays a vital role in Mauritius’s broader environmental strategy and provides insights that are crucial for sustainable development and resilience against climate impacts. With the plans for the country’s next satellite in the works through a collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Mauritius is expanding its Earth observation capabilities to facilitate more effective monitoring of the island’s natural resources and marine areas and position itself as a space-engaged nation focused on harnessing space technology for environmental sustainability and national security.
