Visit to the SENSAT Centre in Senegal

A recent visit by H.E. Dr. Tidiane Ouattara, on the 19th June 2025, to the SENSAT Space Data Control and Collection Centre in Diamniadio, Senegal, offered a unique opportunity to engage with Professor Gayane Faye, the Centre’s Coordinator, and his team. The visit, which was also attended by Mr. Adama Kane, President of the Senegalese Association of Geomatics Professionals (ASPG), highlighted the country’s growing role in the African space sector.

The visit underscored Senegal’s strong political commitment to positioning itself as a key player in the space industry. This commitment is reflected in the nation’s leadership, which continues to inspire efforts toward advancing space technologies. A special recognition was given to Professor Gayane Faye and his dedicated team, whose vision and unwavering commitment are driving the country’s progress in this critical area. One of the most striking aspects of the Centre’s operations was the diverse composition of the team, particularly the involvement of young women in space-related fields. During the visit, the delegation had the chance to meet over a dozen young, passionate engineers and technicians who are highly skilled and deeply dedicated to their work. This focus on human capital is seen as a vital resource for future growth, and Senegal is clearly making strides in nurturing talent across all levels.

Senegal has firmly established itself as a key actor in the African space industry. Space is a shared resource, and Senegal’s efforts are enabling the continent to take its rightful place in this global field. The role of space in socio-economic development cannot be overstated, and for Africa to succeed, it must secure its position as a leading force in space exploration and technology.

The African Space Agency (AfSA) was created with the mission of ensuring that Africa controls its space destiny and affirms its position on the global stage. The leadership demonstrated by Senegal in this area places the country among the select group of space-faring nations and serves as a model for other African countries.

Senegal’s commitment to advancing space technologies and fostering innovation offers numerous opportunities for the continent. With the right investments and leadership, Africa is on track to become a new frontier in space exploration and development.
