Kenya Space Agency (KSA): Kenya’s space programme, led by the Kenya Space Agency (KSA), focuses primarily on leveraging space technologies for earth observation, disaster management, and agricultural productivity. The launch of its first nano-satellite, 1KUNS-PF, in collaboration with the University of Nairobi in 2018, marked a significant milestone in Kenya’s journey toward building a robust space sector. KSA continues to invest in research and capacity building, partnering with local universities and international stakeholders, such as Italy, to foster collaboration on projects like the Luigi Broglio Space Centre.
Recently, Kenya became the third African country to install the Total Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (TART) system, further boosting its capacity for space weather monitoring and environmental data collection. Additionally, KSA’s strategic plan for 2023-2027 highlights its focus on satellite development, data collection for environmental monitoring, and capacity-building initiatives aimed at addressing key sectors such as agriculture, wildlife conservation, and disaster management. Through partnerships with international space agencies and its growing local infrastructure, Kenya is positioning itself as a key player in both regional and global space initiatives, aiming to optimise the use of satellite data for resource management and environmental protection.
