Botswana Space Programme: Botswana is steadily emerging as a key player in the global space sector, leveraging innovative projects and strategic partnerships to strengthen its space infrastructure. The country’s focus on satellite communications, Earth observation, and capacity development is pivotal to its progress in the industry. A major milestone in Botswana’s space journey is the anticipated launch of its first satellite, BotSat-1, in 2025. This satellite is set to play a crucial role in Earth observation, meteorology, and disaster management. By providing valuable data for agriculture, environmental monitoring, and urban planning, BotSat-1 will reduce Botswana’s reliance on foreign satellite services and enhance its domestic capabilities. In addition to its satellite ambitions, Botswana has built strong international partnerships. For example, the University of
Botswana has joined forces with the Angolan National Space Program Management Office (GGPEN) to share expertise in satellite technology and advance research efforts. Botswana is also working to expand its satellite communications infrastructure. In collaboration with Azercosmos, the Azerbaijani space agency, Botswana is improving satellite communications services nationwide, especially in remote and underserved areas. Botswana is further strengthening its space-related expertise, advancing its geomatics and Earth observation initiatives. In June 2023, the Botswana Institute of Geomatics partnered with the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) to foster innovation in geographic information systems (GIS) and satellite-based Earth observation. This partnership aims to support sustainable resource management and environmental conservation. Botswana is on a clear path to becoming a space-faring nation Through strategic collaborations, groundbreaking projects like BotSat-1, and investments in critical sectors such as meteorology and geomatics.
