People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria

Algeria – Agence Spatiale Algérienne (ASAL): Established in 2002, the Algerian Space Agency (ASAL) serves as Algeria’s leading institution for the development and promotion of space science and technology. Its mission is to drive sustainable development and bolster national security through space advancements while enhancing Algeria’s autonomy in space activities. Since its inception, ASAL has made remarkable progress in expanding Algeria’s space capabilities.

One of its key milestones was the launch of AlSat-1 in 2002, Algeria’s first Earth observation satellite. This was followed by the launch of AlSat-2A and AlSat-2B, which provide high-resolution imagery for applications such as agriculture, environmental monitoring, and urban planning. In addition to satellite development, ASAL has played an integral role in strengthening regional and international partnerships. It collaborates with global space partners, including China, the European Space Agency (ESA), the French National Centre for Space Studies (CNES), and other African space programmes. ASAL’s satellites also support critical functions in disaster management and climate monitoring, helping to address challenges such as water scarcity and land use planning. ASAL remains committed to advancing Algeria’s position in the global space community. Through continuous innovation, regional cooperation, and investment in national expertise, ASAL is building a foundation for the country’s growing influence in space technologies.
