Djibouti – Ministry of Higher Education and Space Research Programme: Djibouti is making significant strides in its space program through a series of impactful initiatives and international partnerships that are enhancing its capabilities in satellite technology and climate adaptation. In 2023, the country launched its first satellite, Djibouti-1A, which aims to improve both communication and data collection across the nation. Additionally, Djibouti is advancing its satellite technology by working on the integration of Djibouti-1B in collaboration with Ride Space.

The country’s commitment to building local expertise is evident through efforts led by the Djibouti Ministry of Higher Education and Research, which aims to develop human capital to match its growing technological advancements. This dedication is complemented by Djibouti’s strategic international collaborations, including a partnership with France to establish an international doctoral alliance focused on climate adaptation. Djibouti’s recent entry into the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Charter further underscores its commitment to strengthening climate risk management and enhancing its space capabilities.

One of the most ambitious aspects of Djibouti’s space program is the memorandum of understanding signed with HKATG to build a $1 billion spaceport, which will facilitate satellite launches and support the nation’s long-term space goals. In summary, Djibouti is emerging as a key player in Africa’s space sector by focusing on satellite development, international collaboration, and climate adaptation while investing in human capital to ensure sustainable growth in the space industry.
