Earth Observation

Satellites have become essential tools for African countries, especially in managing natural resources and preventing disasters. In regions near the Sahara, satellite images have helped predict locust breeding grounds, allowing authorities to intervene and save large areas of farmland. Remote sensing data also assists in identifying ideal spots for drilling water or oil, and monitoring deforestation, pollution, and environmental damage. Mapping has improved with satellite imagery, making it faster to produce accurate maps and keep up with urban growth. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and stereoscopic imaging offer detailed topographic maps, aiding city planners and peacekeeping missions. Additionally, satellites help study large-scale environmental changes, like ocean circulation, climate change, and desertification.

Climate change is deeply affecting the continent, urban development, deforestation, air and water pollution, insurgency,  and illegal mining are only some of the struggles severely diminishing the quality of life of many African. Space technology, Earth Observation applications, are helping us solve these issues one at a time.
