National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Nigeria: Nigeria’s space programme stands as one of the most leading programmes on the African continent, driven by goals in satellite communications, Earth observation, and disaster management. Spearheaded by the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Nigeria launched its first communication satellite, NigComSat-1, in 2007 and has continued to pursue ambitious milestones, including plans for manned space missions by 2030. Recent announcements from NASRDA emphasize a commitment to building home-grown satellite technology to reduce dependency on foreign systems and enhance national expertise.
With plans to deploy four new satellites, Nigeria aims to improve data collection capabilities to support sustainable development initiatives, enhance telecommunications, and drive economic growth. These advancements target key sectors like agriculture, healthcare, and education, where satellite technology can provide critical infrastructure support. International collaborations, such as partnerships with Shanghai Integrated Infrastructural Development Ltd and MoUs with organizations like SERA and Egate Technology, reflect NASRDA’s focus on boosting Nigeria’s standing in global space technology and paving the way for innovative projects, including sending the first Nigerian astronaut to space.
