Ethiopian Space Science and Geospatial Institute (SSGI): In 2021, the Ethiopian Space Science and Technology Institute (ESSTI) merged with the Ethiopian Geospatial Information Institute (EGII) to form the Ethiopian Space Science and Geospatial Institute (ESSGI). ESSGI is now responsible for overseeing Ethiopia’s space activities, driving research in space science, satellite technology, and geospatial information.

Ethiopia’s space program has a strong focus on leveraging space technology for sustainable development, particularly in the areas of agricultural monitoring, climate change mitigation, and natural resource management. Ethiopia’s space journey gained momentum with its first satellite, ETRSS-1, launched in 2019. This satellite plays a crucial role in environmental monitoring and climate research, supporting the country’s food security and climate adaptation goals. ESSGI has prioritised earth observation to address the country’s development challenges while promoting educational outreach to foster interest in space science among the younger generation.

Ethiopia collaborates on several continental initiatives, including GMES & Africa, focusing on early warning systems for natural disasters. Moreover, the country has developed partnerships with international space agencies like China’s CNSA, NASRDA, and others to boost its capabilities in satellite technology and ensure that space contributes to Ethiopia’s long-term goals of development and sustainability.
